W&W WARDROBE

  1. What is your wardrobe? (Antique armoire, built-in closet, back of a chair, a whole room?) I have built-in wardrobes in my bedroom. I also have a chest of drawers and, just recently, I feel like I just don’t have enough room for my clothes, shoes and bags. I need to be ruthless and have a clear out. There are hangers everywhere and my shoes are piled up every which way.
  1. How often do you shop?
Roughly once a week, but I don’t always buy. I splash out more in spring and autumn because I get excited by the change of seasons. I’m far stricter with myself than I used to be. I won’t buy something unless I’m sure I’ll get a huge amount of wear out it.

  1. What’s your most treasured item?
My Burberry mac. I bought it second hand for £50 about 20 years ago and have worn it every year since then. It was bucketing down this morning and I wore it to work, but I like pairing it with faded denim best.

  1. What’s the one piece you always buy every single season?
Black ankle boots. They work with just about everything else I own. I have three leather pairs and two suede pairs with different heel heights and shapes.
  1. What’s the item you are guaranteed to wear at least once a week?
My '& Other Stories' black and white polka dot silk shirt. It’s great for work and I dress it down with black chinos or blue jeans at the weekend.

  1. Trousers or skirts?
I’m top-heavy so I often balance out my bottom half with wide-legged, high-waisted trousers or flared midi skirts. I either go for soft, fluid fabrics or stiff materials with a bit of structure.

  1. Jumper or Jacket?
Don’t make me choose! My current favourites are a black extra-fine Merino crew neck sweater from Uniqlo, which has a gorgeously neat shape and a cotton, cropped, puffed shoulder jacket from Next, which is a couple of years old. I also have a black biker from Whistles and an ancient brown fake fur opera jacket from Coast that my 16-year-old often steals.

  1. What’s your weekend style?
Relaxed and a bit more luxe than during the week, when I’m either working for home in sweats or dressed conservatively for my day job. I’ll usually be found in jeans, boots or trainers and a pretty top. I am a serial buyer of lace or embroidery detail cream cotton and silk blouses.

  1. How has your style changed over the years?
I am more confident about what suits me and I’ll spend more on fewer items. I have always loved a low-key classic cut in a neutral shade, but now I know how to give a look an edge with an unexpected shape or finish. I used to dress in what I thought others would consider appropriate. Now I dress for me and feel much happier for it.

10. Whose wardrobe do you covet?

I don’t – honestly. I love so many of the items I own and get a huge amount of enjoyment wearing them in fresh ways and with new pieces. I tend to covet at least one item every season though. Right now, there’s a red print high-necked top from Rixo that is making my heart beat a litte faster…
